EJ Victor three-seat ivory damask sofa, Lot 106, Barrington estate sale

Good upholstery from our Short Pump estate: an EJ Victor three-seat sofa in ivory damask (Lot 106), a pair of button-tufted Chesterfield sofas in red with throw pillows (Lots 201 and 202), a cream channel-tufted Chesterfield-style sofa (Lot 687), matching tufted damask armchairs (Lots 104 and 105), a Charles Stewart velvet ottoman (Lot 127) and a pair of Baker ottomans (Lot 204).

Right now: all four sofas and both armchairs have no bids. Bidding opens at $5 on each.

Why is it called a Chesterfield?

Red button-tufted Chesterfield sofa, Lot 201, Barrington estate sale

The story goes that Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694–1773), asked for a sofa a gentleman could sit up straight on without wrinkling his suit. The result: deep button tufting and rolled arms the same height as the back.

The catch: nobody has found proof the Earl ever ordered one. The name doesn't show up for a sofa until the late 1800s, but it stuck. In Canada, "chesterfield" still means any couch.
